Sempukuji cave is on the way, left side, of Ainoura river running through the northern Sasebo, and is open facing outcrop of sandstone which is 89m high above sea level.
It was discovered in 1966 and excavated 10 times for research. Lots of remains from Paleolithic era to Heian era have been excavated there. Those remains are very important to show the beginning of ancient Jomon era in Japan. They were originally found by some boys brimming with full of curiosity, and it led to a big discovery which rewrote world history.

泉福寺洞窟は、佐世保市北部を流れる相浦川中流の左岸、標高８９ｍの砂岩露頭に直面して開口しています。昭和４４年（１９６６）の発見以後１０回の発掘調査が行われ、旧石器時代から平安時代に至る遺物が出土しています。この土器は、日本の縄文時代の始まりを示す遺跡として重要ですが、元々、好奇心旺盛な少年たちによって発見され、世界の歴史を塗り替える大発見につながりました。出土品の一部は佐世保市島瀬美術センターにも展示してあります。まだ、ご覧になられてない方は、ぜひ一度立ち寄り、我が国の縄文文化の始まりの一形態を示す歴史的価値が非常に高い佐世保市の出土品を味わってください。
