In July 2018, Saikaibashi which connects Sasebo city and Saikai City was elected as Registered Tangible Cultural Property (architecture). It is 316m long and over the Strait of Inoura (a.k.a.Hario Seto) which is famous for eddy tide.
Its construction was started as the project of war damage reconstruction in 1950. It took 5 years and cost 550 million (at that time). The length between the base of the bridge was 243.7m, the third longest in the world at that time and was praised as No.1 in Asia. The bridge itself is very popular as a tour spot with functional beauty of Hario Seto’s landmark as well as technical elegance.
Why don’t we go and rediscover the greatness of Saikaibashi. The second Saikaibashi is also nice and you can walk across to enjoy fantastic scenery.
去る７月、佐世保市と西海市を結ぶ西海橋が、登録有形文化財（建造物）に選ばれました。
全長３１６ｍの西海橋は、佐世保市針尾東町と西海市西彼町の間に架かり、橋下には渦潮で知られる「伊ノ浦瀬戸」（針尾瀬戸）があります。戦災復興事業として１９５０年に建設が始まり、５５年に開通しました。総事業費は５億５千万円（当時）で、アーチの付け根間の長さ２４３．７ｍは当時、世界第３位の長さを誇り、東洋一と評されました。技術的に卓越した存在であるだけでなく、針尾瀬戸のランドマークとなる機能美をも備え、橋自体が観光スポットとして広く知られています。
