In the February edition of the collaboration article with the local monthly magazine “Naradewa!,” we are featuring a Japanese-style Sports Day. 月刊ならでわ！2月号のコラボ記事では、日本の運動会を紹介しています。
The 6th International Friendship Sports Day was held on November 12. Non-Japanese residents were able to experience the unique Japanese Sports Day games along with local high school students. It is an annually held project that the American town Sasebo can hold. This event is organized by the Sports Team of the Sasebo Intercultural Project.
11月12日、第5回 国際交流大運動会が開催されました！日本独特の運動会を、外国人と日本人が一緒になって楽しもう！という基地のまち佐世保らしい企画です。こちらは英語で交わるまちSaseboプロジェクトのスポーツ交流チームが開催する恒例のイベント。今回は、ならでわライターさんと一緒に取材しましたよ。
Opening Ceremony|開会式
Following the Japanese Sports Day tradition, the sporting event kicked off with the opening ceremony. After two participants took an oath to play fair, everyone did some warm-up exercises to the Japanese classic radio exercise “Taiso” music.
まずは、運動会の伝統に則り、開会式からスタート。選手宣誓と準備運動も定番です。
Fun Games| 競技
The first game of the event was go-round-the-bat. They literally had to go around the bat 10 times before running to the goal. It doesn’t matter your size and age. If you feel dizzy and fall, you’ll lose. A young girl wearing a blue shirt was the fastest among all the participants!
一種目目は、ぐるぐるバット。年齢も体格も関係なし。目が回って転んだら負けてしまいます。全参加者の中で際立って速かったのは、青シャツの女の子でした。
In the four-legged race, foreign residents and Japanese students formed teams. They struggled to move forward and laughed with each other. They seemed to enjoy themselves a lot.
外国人と日本人がチームを組んで三人四脚に挑戦。苦戦しては笑い合い、とっても楽しそうでした。
The team ball tossing game called tamaire is one of the unique games that you can experience only in Japan
団体戦で戦う玉入れは、日本独特の競技です。
The tug-of-war was the culmination of the event. Everyone had a great time.
最後の種目は綱引き。盛り上がらないわけありません！

Jude from California participated in the Sports Day for the second time.
カリフォルニア州出身のジュードさんは、去年に続いて２回目の参加です。
“I joined this event again since I enjoyed interacting with local people last year. We don’t have a similar event in the US, so the Sports Day event is inspiring to me. I like the ball-tossing game the most.”
昨年、日本人の友達ができて楽しかったので、今回も応募しました。母国には運動会的なイベントがないので、とっても新鮮なんです。競技は玉入れが一番好きです。

Hirahara-san from Sasebo Commercial High School helped organize this event as a volunteer staff.
佐世保商業高校の平原さんは、ボランティアとして運営にも携わりました。
“I joined in this activity because I wanted to make foreign friends. I usually don’t have many opportunities to talk to American people, but I easily talk to them through the games. It was a lot of fun.”
外国人の友達を作りたくて参加しました！普段はあまり外国人にふれあう機会がなかったのですが、運動会だと気軽に話しかけることができるのでとても楽しかったです。

The leader of the Sports Day team, Zack always wants foreign residents to enjoy Japanese culture more. The concept of the event is to show good parts of Sasebo’s culture. This time, they held Mochimaki, an event of scattering rice cakes for people, and chose a Sasebo burger for the participation prize which was given to all the participants!
スポーツ交流チームのリーダーのザックさんは、「外国人にももっと日本の文化を楽しんでほしい！」という思いで活動しています。チームのコンセプトは、佐世保の良さを知ってもらうこと。今回は、イベントのあと餅まきを開催。参加者全員に「佐世保バーガー」が振る舞われました。
