【Mukyu-do: man-made air-raid shelter】 【

Mukyu-do (literally means ”eternal cave”) is a big man-made air-raid shelter located in joma cho, Sasebo. It was dug and curved by teachers and elementary students of Miya National school at that time during the World WarⅡ. It is 5m wide, 20m deep and was capable to have 500 evacuees. Inside the cave, classroom with podium, toilets, kitchen, food storage, etc. were installed as they could have classes and daily life during evacuation. An arched ceiling of the cave is too beautiful to imagine that it was curved by little kids. Construction work continued from August, 1943 to August 15, 1945. However the site is a little far from central area of Sasebo, it’s quite worth visiting.
