Obon is an annual Buddhist event to commemorate ones family’s ancestors. It takes place from August 13th to the 16th in most areas of Japan. It is believed that our ancestors’ spirits return to our world during this week. In order to welcome their ancestor’s spirits, a lot of Japanese workers take their summer vacation from August 8 and prepare for their family gathering . Because of Obon, most hospitals and clinics will close.
If you get sick or injured during Obon, please make sure that the clinic you regularly go to will be open. Or, you can go to the City Emergency Clinic next to Sasebo City Hall. To avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion don’t forget to drink enough water and get enough salt in your diet.
