Hi you all Japan aficionados! Today, we are going to deliver a recap ep from our video series “Let’s Speak Sasebo-ben (dialect)”. We picked 5 easiest phrases that you can use right away.
今回は、2017年12月からお届けしていた佐世保弁動画の総集編をお届けします。15話の中から、今すぐ使えるフレーズ5つを厳選しました！
1. そいよかね | Sounds good!
“Sounds good” is frequently used in our daily lives. So, we recommend “soy yokane” as the first phrase to remember for Sasebo-ben leaners! In Sasebo-ben, The I or Y sound of adjectives changes to “Ka”. For example, yoi (good) is yoka, kawaii (cute) is kawaika, and samui (cold) is samuka.
Ｅチャンが最初に選んだ佐世保弁は“そいよかね”でした。同意を表す言葉「それいいね！」をぜひ佐世保弁で言ってみて！
佐世保弁では、形容詞の“い”が”か”に変わります。「よい、かわいい、さむい」 は「 よか、かわいか、さむか」。
Yuki-sensei, you were young! ユキ先生、若い！

2. いやばい | No way!
“I ya bai” is an opposite reaction of “Soy yokane” . It’s a casual form, and completely declining the suggestion.
「そいよかね」の反対、「いやばい」もセットで覚えましょう。「いやばい」はカジュアルな表現で、強めの否定になります。

3. そい・こい編（feat.村島佳佑） | Here & there w/ Keisuke Murashima
This is from Vol.8. You can learn how to say “soy (soi)” and “koy (koi)”, which respectably mean “that (or it) ” and “this”. We also use “ai” when we say “that” , but it implies farther distance than “soy(soi)” .
“これ(this)”は佐世保弁で“こい”。“それ(it) ”は“そい”、“あれ(that) ”は“あい”。３つセットで覚えると便利！ ただし英語にすると、“そい”は“it”ではなく、“that”のほうが近い場合があります。

4．うんにゃ編（feat.よりこ）？ | Nope w/ Yoriko
We invited Yoriko, a singer-songwriter/radio DJ/MC/actress/model from Sasebo!
“Un-nya” is the casual form of “no”, like “nope” or “nah”. “Icchon” is used when you are denying something completely, like in the video, Yoriko is expressing “it was someone I did not know at all on the phone”.
こちらは、シンガーソングライター／ラジオDJ／司会／女優／モデルのよりこさんをお招きした回です。
「うんにゃ」、これは今すぐ使えますね！ ちなみに、“いっちょん”は、強く否定する時に使います。「いっちょんわからん」は、「まったく分からない」。「いっちょんすかん」は、「まったくすぎじゃない」など。

5．ほんなごて編（feat.ジャマール） | For real? w/ Jamaal Rowe
The last one is from Vol.12. We invited Jamaal-sensi, an English teacher of Sasebo North High. You can learn how to say “honna gote”, which means “really”. It’s similar to the Japanese slang “maji-de”. It’s really a funny sound! You should use it!
最後は「ほんなごて？」。 北高の英語講師、ジャマール先生をお迎えして撮影しました！ 「本当？」「本当に？」の意。普段で言うところの「マジで？」のニュアンスです。音がとっても面白いので、ぜひ使ってみて！
He went back to London… We miss Jamaal sensei. ジャマール先生はイギリスに帰っちゃった… 寂しいなあ。
