March 3rd is a Japanese traditional girls’ day, “Hinamatsuri” or Peach Festival (Momo-no-Sekku). At this time of year, people in Nagasaki love to have a special cake. It’s called Momo (peach) Castella! Since a peach was recognized as “the fruit of longevity” in ancient China, momo castella became a good luck confection in our prefecture.
３月３日は日本伝統のガールズデー｢ひな祭り｣です。 別名“桃の節句”といわれるこの日に、長崎では欠かせないお菓子があります。 それは桃カステラ！ 古代中国で桃は“長寿の実”といわれたことから、長崎で縁起菓子として定着しています。
The thick icing is literally made of sugar. So, it’s really sweet. It reminds me of American style cup cakes like below.
アイシングがお砂糖なので、と～っても甘い！個人的にはアメリカンなカップケーキを思い出します（写真下）。
But we won’t count the calories for one day if it tastes good! I can’t resist buying this local seasonal tradition!
でも美味しければ、1日ぐらいカロリーは気にしない！ この時期になると、つい食べたくなるのは長崎県民の性ですね！
This year, Echan’s Yuki-sensei bought one momo castella at Shougetsudou (松月堂）along the arcade. Map is here . It was so delicious!! Since the dough is not too sweet and its texture is more like a fluffy cake than an usual castella, you can eat it up in a few seconds! The taste of the icing was elegant!

You can buy momo castellas at Japanese confectionery shops around the city. But they are normally sold until early March! Why don’t you try this Nagasaki’s unique tradition this spring?
