Do you know there is a homestay program that allows you to experience real American culture in Sasebo? In this program, students or travelers can learn English through various activities such as cooking and playing games with a host family. The American Life Club, the program organizer, offers two day-trip courses (6-hours and 9-hours) and a full two-day course. These services are used not only to learn English and experience international exchange but also to prepare for studying abroad.

We visited one of the hosts, Cinnamon

【Cinnamon from Texas, USA】
She has been working as a kindergarten teacher at the US military base in Sasebo for 5 years and a half. She loves meeting people and has always been interested in cultural exchange. Every time she hosts Japanese guests, she enjoys the precious opportunity that God gives her. How she spends time with her guests varies depending on the student’s wishes and ability: sometimes she spends the whole time in her house with them, but sometimes she tours them around the city. She always has her best experience when her students try their best to communicate in English and then teach Japanese back to her. The handmade gift by a high school girl is her greatest treasure.
Timetable of a 6-hour day trip course!
【10AM】Meet your host family
After a short discussion with the coordinator, you’ll visit your host family’s house.

【11AM】A house tour and ice-breaking chat
Cinnamon’s house has a comfy living room with tatami mats. That’s exactly what she wanted: a large space to accommodate guests and traditional Japanese elements. She loves her quiet neighborhood which reminds her of her hometown in Texas.

Cinnamon sings gospel. She performed a song in response to our request. Her voice was beautiful! ✨

【Noon】Prepare lunch together
The host family and guests will make American-style dishes for their lunch. Sometimes they choose to dine out depending on the guest’s preference.

In her fridge, there are many American products purchased at the Navy base.

This is another example of an actual homestay program. They are making tacos for lunch.

【2 PM】English Lesson or Games
After lunch, you can spend time with your host family as you like: taking an English lesson, playing board games, and more.

The program organizer, American Life Club is looking for American families who can be a host. If you’re interested in it, contact them.
