The Sasebo burger is our city’s specialty. It was created in the 1950s from a recipe from the US Navy base. These big handmade burgers are crafted with an original sauce that’s very popular nationwide. “What do the foreign residents in Sasebo think of our delicious Sasebo burgers?” That was the question that we have always wanted to find out. In the October edition of the collaboration article with the local monthly magazine “Naradewa!,” we conducted a street interview to find an answer to this tasty question.

Before we get down to the main subject, we would like to introduce one of our important helpers, Rosuke Ioka, a sophomore at the University of Nagasaki, an expert in the art of the street interview. Rosuke has interviewed 380 non-Japanese residents in the course of the year.
Ryosuke started doing street interviews and blogs on his website (click here) with non-Japanese people in Sasebo when he was inspired by Tarosac, a popular YouTuber who travels abroad and asks questions to people he meets. He says he was originally an introvert and couldn’t speak English very well but he’s overcome his fears after doing more then three hundred and eighty interviews with English-speaking residents.
The topics that he chose when he interviewed non-Japanese people caught our interest. They vary from life in Sasebo or how to befriend Japanese people to personal stuff such as self-confidence or big interviewees strengths and weaknesses. He’s really digging deep into cross-cultural understanding. His blog is mostly written in Japanese, but please take a look anyway and you’ll find your friends or colleagues on his blog (click here).
Where Is Your Favorite Sasebo Burger Place?
So, our question is where the most popular Sasebo burger place among non-Japanese people is. To find the answer, we conducted interviews on the Ginza. What impressed us most was that many people gave us the names of long-established Sasebo burger restaurants rather than new shops. Big Man which is famous for its handmade bacon was popular along with one of the oldest Hikari. But the most popular burger restaurant was Log Kit. Here are some words about Log Kit. written by its die hard fans.
Irwin & Irene from America.
We had our first burger with a fried egg on top in Sasebo since we don’t usually use egg as an ingredient for a burger in the US. The Sasebo burger has many ingredients such as tomato’s and cheese. Log Kit is very delicious and conveniently located since it has a branch shop in Sasebo station.
Miller & Jada from America
The difference between American burgers and Sasebo ones is the sauce! In America, you only get ketchup and mustard, but the burger sauce here is sweet and so delicious!
Cedric from America
I’ve just moved to Sasebo a week ago, so I haven’t visited many burger places yet. But the one I ate at Log Kit was so delicious that I ate another one!
In the next article “Where Is Your Favorite Sasebo Burger Place? Part 2,” we will be visiting the most popular shop “Log Kit” and reporting on the burger! Do look forward to it!
