In the April issue of a collaboration article between the local free paper ‘Naradewa’ and Sasebo E Channel, we feature an international high school student group “Sasebo Change,” and their event ‘Special Planetarium Projection’ held on March 2nd.

What is ‘Sasebo Change’?
Sasebo Change is a youth community group organized by local high school students, aiming to collaborate beyond the usual boundaries of schools and implement their own ideas to solve issues in the area that they live in. The founder and leader of this group is Risa Berry from Sasebo Nishi High School. When she participated in a university program in Tokyo, she was shocked by the fact that students in urban areas have a lot more volunteer opportunities and are connected with companies and society. So, she founded Sasebo Change in the hope of creating such opportunities in Sasebo.
Sasebo Change consists of four teams: the International Exchange Team, Multigenerational Exchange Team, Hoshi Kirari Team, and Matsuura Railway Team. Special Planetarium Projection is a collaboration event among the International Exchange Team, the Hoshi Kirari Team, and Keystone, a volunteer group inside the Sasebo Navy base. Amelie and Jesus from Keystone were in charge of many of the jobs including script translation. “It’s cool to host this event with local Japanese students. This is going to be a great kickstart to do more together,” said Amelie. Jesus was also excited to introduce this planetarium to international guests this time, saying “Hoshi Kirari is a hidden charm in Sasebo and has a great potential.”

Bilingual Special Planetarium Projection on March 2nd
The reception started at 10:40 a.m. Around 50 Japanese and American guests came to see their first bilingual planetarium projection.
The event started with a greeting from Daisuke Miyajima, mayor of Sasebo City.
The projection started at 11 a.m. High school students did all of the work from script translation and event promotion to projector operation and narration performance.
The narration includes Greek mythology related to the spring constellation.

I enjoyed it a lot thanks to the hard work from high school students. Actually, there is little difference between American and Japanese planetarium projections, but this version intrigued me with great storytelling and beautiful visual effects.
