Have you ever seen “Stone Statues of Buddha” in Saiko-ji temple in Kami-yunoki cho, Sasebo? They can be seen in the approach to the temple and in its inner area. They were donated by believers of the temple in 1848. They made stones statues of Buddha based on the principal images of Saigoku (west country’s) Hachiju-hachi kasho tera (temples in 88 sacred places). It is said that stones of each temple are buried under each stone statue of Buddha. They have survived the movement to abolish Buddhism and all of them still remain. How miraculous!

佐世保市上柚木町にある西光寺の参道や奥の院一帯にある石仏群は、本寺の信徒が嘉永元年（1848年）に寄進したものです。西国八十八箇所寺の本尊を石仏としたもので、それぞれの寺の土が石仏の下に収められているといいます。明治の廃仏毀釈でも破壊を免れ、１体も欠けることなく現存しています。
